Pit Bull Attack #1 DOK Baltimore MD

Way back before I started Medium Happiness the reporting of pit bull attacks in the news bothered me. I don’t own a pit bull; I know a few people who have owned or own one–but that doesn’t really matter. What matters is why the major media sources feel compelled to tell people about the latest dog mauling, which almost always involves a pit bull (not a real dog breed by the way). By the way, this was going on way before the Michael Vick extravaganza.

Car crashes make the local news but they don’t ever make it to cnn.com unless it’s someone famous, is a dog attack really that different?

In George Saunders’ new book The Braindead Megaphone he talks about our media and how they basically have the loudest voice, but don’t monitor what they say very well. The pit bull attack stories are a case in point. Before they go and put up the latest grandma-mauled-by-pit-bull-in-own-backyard story they ought to stop and think if that top story link might be replaced by something more news worthy. BE AFRAID DOGS ARE ATTACKING!?

I have decided to help the news outlets and our readers by compiling all of the pit bull attack stories right here on Medium Happiness.com. We’ve created our own pit bull-attack shorthand to make the cataloging go more smoothly: Each attack will get its own # and ID tag. Fear and enjoy.

The tags are:

DOK- Dog on Kid

DOW- Dog on Woman

DOM- Dog on Man

DOE- Dog on Elderly Person

DSOP- Multiple Dogs on Person
