The highest I ever bowled in a single game is a 265, but I never came close to breaking 600 in 3 games.

It’s not by chance that The Big Lebowski, a film steeped in bowling inuendo, is one of the most culturally rich films of my time.

Here are a few bowling snippets that capture  the greatness of this moderately slovenly, highly enjoyable pasttime.

The hucksters from the show are currently doing a live version of Nitro at arenas around the world. It looks like an amazing experience and I will definitely be attending when/if they come to New York.

Here’s something you don’t see everyday in North America, a local ski jump. “Hey, Dad I’m going to go down to the 120m hill for a few hours before dinner.” “Ok, son. Don’t die.”

The greatest mysteries are obviously those that are most difficult to answer.

One thing that has perplexed me for years is why golf footwear is so persistently, so indescribably hideous? The shoes all have incredibly high insteps, thick soles, and impossibly long, beakish looking toes. You would really be hard pressed to make them any uglier. I can’t believe that Nike, or Adidas, or somebody hasn’t done a better job of incorporating good sneaker design into their golf shoes. Puma has made an admirable attempt, but like many Puma sneakers, they are clearly going after the Eurotrash. What? Germany has golfers, too.  

There’s a huge gulf to be filled in American golf shoe design. I don’t see any options that would appeal to your average 18 year old golf nerd. For them, it must be a battle, and ultimate resignation, of choosing the option that is least ugly.

In the mean time, I’d like to give a shout out to Shaun White–who definitely reads this blog–for completely manhandling the competition, like nothing I’ve ever seen, in the Men’s snowboard half pipe at the Olympics. And I’m glad to report that NBC announcers didn’t refer to Shaun as the “Great White,” like X Games’ Sal Masekela was doing a few weeks ago. I get it, he meant shark, but it’s a little too much grand wizard for my taste.

The mean age for Winter X Games competitors is about 18, but the magnitude and complexity of the tricks is off the charts. Check out the crash from training today in the video below. Poor Simon Dumont hits the deck of a half pipe (which is pretty much pure ice) like nothing I’ve ever seen. And, he gets up and skis away; after being knocked unconcious.

The crash happens around 4:15. The rest is somewhat unspectacular.

Contrary to what the town “hopes” this gesture will accomplish, I think it’s going to make the cops bust even more kids.

MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION
DENVER (AP) – Voters in Breckenridge are high on pot — or at least legalizing it. A ballot measure passed overwhelmingly yesterday in the Colorado ski town that would legalize marijuana. Voters gave thumbs-up to the proposal to allow adults over 21 to have up to an ounce of pot. But the voters could just be blowing smoke. Marijuana possession is still a state crime for people without medical clearance. Supporters hope the vote sends a message to local authorities about law enforcement priorities.

There are people all over the world using these suits, but one of the guy in this video, JT Holmes, is a well known US pro skier. Which would explain how they got linked up with 60 Minutes.
